The PNG Dockyard is focused on grooming young Papua New Guineans into skilled professionals by providing career opportunities through its on-the-job training program.

The company has established in-house, an on-the-job structured Trades Training Program for young Papua New Guineans who wish to take up a professional trade

On-the-job training aims at equipping young people with the right skills and providing career opportunities.

Not many young Papua New Guineans graduate from high school which often limits their future employment prospects. The PNG Dockyard Trades Training Program recognises this fact and provides a second chance for such former students.

A range of trades in various departments at the Dockyard are on offer. After formal and on-the-job training, students have the opportunity to graduate and hold a qualified trade position at the Dockyard.

The PNG Dockyard Training section also conducts skills inventory assessments on current employees to identify skills deficiencies. A training program is drawn up based on these assessments.  Training is scheduled for Saturdays to maintain company productivity during workdays.

A refresher course is organised for apprentices at each training point to prepare them for apprenticeship block courses conducted at institutions or colleges.

The training program provides mandatory courses like basic fire safety, first aid, working on heights, material handling, in line with safety and rescue units.

It also targets up-skilling current employees to participate in National Apprenticeship and Trade Testing Board, Trade Skills Program which recognises levels of skills of individual personnel.
